What does it mean to be AME?

Richard Allen.jpg

The African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church is more than a denomination—it is a living legacy of faith, perseverance, and freedom. Founded in 1816 by Bishop Richard Allen, the AME Church was born from a courageous stand for dignity and the right to worship God without discrimination. From its earliest days, the church has stood firmly on the belief that the Gospel of Jesus Christ speaks not only to the soul but also to the needs of communities seeking hope, justice, and opportunity.

Rooted in the Methodist tradition, the AME Church emphasizes the power of God’s grace, the authority of Scripture, and a commitment to holy living. Worship within the AME Church reflects both reverence and joy—blending rich spiritual heritage, vibrant music, heartfelt preaching, and a strong sense of fellowship. It is a place where faith is expressed not only through words, but through service, compassion, and commitment to uplifting others.

Throughout history, the AME Church has played a vital role in shaping communities. AME congregations have helped establish schools, support social reform, advocate for civil rights, and provide spiritual guidance during times of challenge and change. What began as a small gathering of believers seeking freedom to worship has grown into a global church with congregations across the United States, Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond.

To be AME means to be part of a tradition that believes faith should inspire action. It means standing on the shoulders of those who believed in freedom, education, justice, and the transforming power of the Gospel. Today, the AME Church continues to carry forward that mission—sharing the love of Christ, strengthening families and communities, and offering a place where all people are welcomed to grow in faith together.
